Eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru, south-eastern Colombia, extreme southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas), and upper and middle Amazonian Brazil (east to lower R Negro and, south of Amazon, to lower and middle R Tapajós and R Curuá).

Forms a superspecies with Guianan Red Cotinga (Phoenicircus carnifex) and could perhaps be considered conspecific.
