Subspecies
Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Has been suggested that it is closely related to Rose-throated Becard (Pachyramphus aglaiae), Pink-throated Becard (Pachyramphus minor) and Crested Becard (Pachyramphus validus), or even conspecific with Rose-throated Becard (Pachyramphus aglaiae) and Pink-throated Becard (Pachyramphus minor) and all are sometimes combined in a separate genus, Platypsaris, differing from present genus in nest shape and placement, as well as in some vocal and minor morphological characters. Subspecies weakly differentiated, barely distinguishable.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • homochrous Sclater, 1859   -  Central and eastern Panama, western Colombia (Pacific slope of western Andes south to southern Chocó at lower R San Juan), western Ecuador (south to western Loja) and north-western Peru (Tumbes, northern Piura).
  • quimarinus (Meyer de Schauensee, 1950)   -  North-western Colombia (Sinú Valley of Bolívar east to southern Magdalena and eastern Antioquia).
  • canescens (Chapman, 1912)   -  North-eastern Colombia (north-eastern Bolívar, northern Magdalena) and north-western Venezuela (base of Sierra de Perijá and both sides of L Maracaibo).
