Subspecies
Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA found one phenotypically typical individual of subspecies interior more closely related to clade formed by Venezuelan Flycatcher (Myiarchus venezuelensis), Panama Flycatcher (Myiarchus panamensis) and Short-crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus ferox) than to two nominate individuals of present species. Further study of decoupled molecular and morphological evolution needed. Subspecies weakly differentiated.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
phaeocephalus Sclater, 1860 - Western Ecuador (southern from northern western Esmeraldas and western Pichincha) and north-western Peru (south to Lambayeque).
interior Zimmer, JT, 1938 - Extreme south-eastern Ecuador (near Zumba, in southern Zamora-Chinchipe) and northern Peru (upper R Marañón drainage in Cajamarca and Amazonas).
