Subspecies
Subspecies overlap, with birds tending to exhibit intermediate characters, in extreme southern Peru and northern Chile.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
polionota Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1870 - Peru (from La Libertad southern along western Andes to Cuzco and northern Puno) and extreme northern Chile (Arica).
oenanthoides (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Southern Peru (Titicaca Basin, in Tacna), northern Chile (Arica), western Bolivia (southern from La Paz) and north-western Argentina (south to La Rioja).
