Breeds extreme south-western Canada (southern British Columbia) and Great Basin states of north-western USA south to south-central California and east to southern Wyoming and central Colorado, locally to western Texas. Winters south-western USA and Mexico (south to southern Baja California and Oaxaca).

No subspecies.
Formerly considered conspecific with Dusky Flycatcher (Empidonax oberholseri). Despite many similarities with that species, is apparently more closely related to Hammond's Flycatcher (Empidonax hammondii) and Black-capped Flycatcher (Empidonax atriceps).
