Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
timidus Nelson, 1900 - Pacific slope of western Mexico (extreme south-eastern Sonora and south-western Chihuahua south to Isthmus of Tehuantepec) and locally in interior (Guerrero and Oaxaca).
albigularis Sclater & Salvin, 1859 - Caribbean slope of eastern Mexico (southern from south-western Tamaulipas) south to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras; probably winters south to southern Central America.
australis Miller, W & Griscom, 1925 - Nicaragua south to Panama.
