Subspecies
Thought by some possibly to form a superspecies with Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens) and Southern Tropical Pewee (Contopus cinereus) and has been considered conspecific with Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens). Geographical variation subtle, size increasing to north, colour becoming richer in moist environments such as Pacific north-west.

Proposed subspecies siccicola (described from Idaho, USA) and amplus (Montana, USA) merged with veliei, and griscomi (Guerrero, in Mexico) with nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • saturatus Bishop, 1900   -  Breeds south-eastern Alaska and north-western and western Canada southern in USA to western Oregon. Winters northern South America (probably mainly Colombia and Venezuela).
  • veliei Coues, 1866   -  Breeds eastern Alaska south through interior mainly to northern Mexico, eastern in USA to northern and western Great Plains states and south to western Texas. Winters probably South America (southern possibly to Peru, Bolivia and northern Argentina).
  • peninsulae Brewster, 1891   -  Breeds western Mexico (southern Baja California). Winters probably north-western South America.
  • sordidulus Sclater, 1859   -  Breeds highlands of Mexico southern at least to Honduras, possibly to north-central Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Winters south to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
