Aptenodytes - Gk, aptos, unfledged, callow or unwinged; L., dyptes, a diver: forsteri - Johann Reinhold Forster (1729 - 1798), German naturalist, accompanied Cook of his second voyage around the world

Abundance (Guide)
Estimated population, 400,000.

Habitat
Marine, circumpolar in pack-ice of the Antarctic region. Generally avoids open water outside limits of floating ice.

Range (Guide)
Antarctica (B).

Vagrant to Argentina, Chile, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), French Southern Territories, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, New Zealand, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Population
Estimated population is 270,000 - 350,000 (2010).

Food
Fish, crustaceans and squid.

Voice
Loud, far-carrying, trumpeting calls in contact, alarm and display, mainly uttered at breeding sites but also at sea.

Nest
None. Egg is incubated on the feet. In colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
1; smooth, greenish-white, often with irregularly spaced tubercles or nodules, mostly at the larger end and often forming a helical zone; pyriform. Incubation: about 62 - 67 days; by male.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Hatched with pale grey down, black on head and two white spots around the eyes. Young fed by both parents, by incomplete regurgitation.
