Woodlands, including humid forest, dry forest, and occasionally mangroves.
Madagascar (B) (NB).
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and hunting are the main threats.

Invertebrates and small vertebrates including frogs and reptiles.
Voice
Calls loudly at night. A creaking 'ank-ank-ank-ank-ank'.

Nest
A large platform made of branches, usually in major forks of trees, 7 - 15 m above the forest floor.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- cristata (Boddaert, 1783) - Eastern Madagascar.
- urschi Lavauden, 1929 - Western Madagascar.
