Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 100,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies differ little, with burmanicus doubtfully valid.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- caerulescens (Linnaeus, 1758) - Eastern Himalayas of India (Kumaon) and Nepal to north-eastern India (northern Assam).
- burmanicus Swann, 1920 - Burma east to central and southern Indochina.
