From south-central Chile (í‘uble) and south-central Argentina (Río Negro) south through Patagonia to Straits of Magellan.

Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010).
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging and overgrazing since the introduction of sheep and cattle, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Long considered colour morph of Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma). Alternatively a subspecies of Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), with which forms superspecies. Some authors also including Eurasian Buzzard (Buteo buteo), Mountain Buzzard (Buteo oreophilus), and Madagascar Buzzard (Buteo brachypterus). Includes synonymous Buteo pictus.
