Subspecies
Closely allied to Buteogallus. Formerly considered subspecies of Crowned Solitary Eagle (Buteogallus coronatus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
sheffleri (van Rossem, 1948) - Locally in highlands from western Mexico (Sonora) to Panama.
solitarius (Tschudi, 1844) - Locally from Colombia (Santa Marta Mts) east to northern Venezuela and south through humid Andes to north-western Argentina. Also occurs in the Guianas, where limits of range virtually unknown.
