Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical swamp forest, dry forest, moist savanna. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Range (Guide)

Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Apparent affinity with old world honey buzzards (Pernis) and bazas (Aviceda). In past, alternatively known as Odontriorchis palliatus. Until recently considered to include White-collared Kite (Leptodon forbesi), which was thought to represent another variant on immature plumage.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

cayanensis (Latham, 1790) - Southern Tamaulipas and Oaxaca (Mexico) south to western Ecuador, Amazonia, Guianas and Trinidad.
monachus (Vieillot, 1817) - Central Brazil to eastern Bolivia, northern Argentina and Paraguay.
