Habitat
Breeds on isolated grassy islands, cliffs, in colonies, and common on rocky and sandy coasts. In winter, coasts, estuaries, beaches and harbors.
Canada, China (mainland), Japan, North Korea, Russia (Asian), South Korea, USA (B).
Vagrant to Guam.
North-eastern Siberia, from Cape Navarin and Kamchatka south to Hokkaido, north-eastern Honshu and Vladivostok. Winters south to Taiwan.
 
Population
Estimated population is 25,000 - 1,000,000 (2010).
