Habitat
During breeding season on heavily grazed, shortgrass prairie, xeric scrub and fallow fields, typically on prairie dog colonies. In non-breeding season semi-desert, dry, bare agricultural land.

Range (Guide)

Canada (B), Mexico (B) (NB), USA (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Hunting and destruction of nesting habitat due to extensive grazing are the main threats.

Forms flocks in winter and on migration.

Subspecies
On occasion considered to belong to superspecies of Caspian Plover (Charadrius asiaticus) and Oriental Plover (Charadrius veredus).

No subspecies.
