Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-knobbed Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula rubricera ). A close relationship with Blue-tailed Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula concinna ) has also been suggested.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
myristicivora (Scopoli, 1786) - Widi Is (off south-eastern Halmahera) and western Papuan Is.
geelvinkiana (Schlegel, 1873) - Meos Num, Numfor and Biak, in Geelvink Bay. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Geelvink Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula geelvinkiana ).
