Subspecies
Related to Moreno's Ground-dove (Metriopelia morenoi). Subspecies obsoleta doubtfully valid. Subspecies zimmeri commonly listed as gymnops, but this name is preoccupied.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

ceciliae (Lesson, 1845) - Western Peru.
obsoleta (Zimmer, JT, 1924) - Eastern Peruvian Andes in upper Marañón Valley and its tributaries in northern Peru (south to La Raya).
zimmeri Peters, JL, 1937 - Extreme southern Peru through Bolivia to northern Chile (Tarapacá) and north-western Argentina (Salta, Jujuy).
