Subspecies
Possibly forms superspecies with Tawny-browed Owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana) and sometimes considered to include Tawny-browed Owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana) as a subspecies, but morphology and vocalizations differ. Validity of subspecies philoscia uncertain.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
melanota (Tschudi, 1844) - Possibly south-eastern Colombia; eastern Ecuador, and northern Peru to south-eastern Peru.
