Subspecies
Closely related to Heliomaster, and sometimes included within that somewhat varied genus. Infraspecific variation very slight, and in need of revision.

Proposed subspecies tertia (northern Peru) tentatively included in nominate, although morphometrically inseparable from atacamensis.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

koepckeae Berlioz, 1975 - North-western Peru (Cerro Illescas in south-western Piura).
vesper (Lesson, 1829) - Most of Peru and extreme northern Chile (Tarapacá).
atacamensis (Leybold, 1869) - Northern Chile (Atacama).
