Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through narcotics cultivation, uncontrolled colonisation, cattle-ranching and mineral exploitation, all of which are facilitated by the many roads approaching the sierra, are the main threats.

Most closely related to Tyrian Metaltail (Metallura tyrianthina), but sympatric with it.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Redder tail and more glistening than smaller Tyrian Metaltail (Metallura tyrianthina). Female Tyrian Metaltail (Metallura tyrianthina) also has less uniform underparts.
