Subspecies
Shares several characters with Longuemare's Sunangel (Heliangelus clarisse) and Amethyst-throated Sunangel (Heliangelus amethysticollis), and may belong to same superspecies. "Heliangelus violicollis", known only from two skins of unknown origin, usually considered an aberrant form of present species, though this may not be the case. Other forms known mainly or exclusively from Bogota. Trade skins include "Heliangelus squamigularis", "Heliangelus barrali" (from Antioquia), "Heliangelus speciosus", "Heliangelus simoni", "Heliangelus rothschildi", "Heliangelus prosantis" and "Heliangelus luminosus" but the validity and possible affinities of these forms is unknown.
