Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Golden Starfrontlet (Coeligena eos), Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (Coeligena bonapartei), Buff-winged Starfrontlet (Coeligena lutetiae) and Bolivian Starfrontlet (Coeligena violifer). Subspecies tamai sometimes misspelt "tamae".

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

helianthea (Lesson, 1838) - Northern and eastern Andes of Colombia (Sierra de Perijá to Bogotá).
tamai Berlioz & Phelps, 1953 - Páramo de Tamá in Táchira (western Venezuela).
