Subspecies
Proposed subspecies zuloagae, known only from type specimen from Falcon (north-western Venezuela), probably represents individual variation of nominate. More study is required. "Coeligena purpurea", from Popayan (south-central Colombia), may be hybrid with Black Inca (Coeligena prunellei). Alternatively, might be a dark variety of Brown Inca (Coeligena wilsoni).
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
coeligena (Lesson, 1833) - Northern Venezuela (Lara east to Miranda).
zuliana Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1953 - Sierra de Perijá, on Venezuela-Colombia border.
columbiana (Elliot, DG, 1876) - Andes of north-western Venezuela (Barinas, Lara, Táchira) and eastern and central Andes of Colombia.
ferruginea (Chapman, 1917) - Central and western Andes of Colombia.
obscura (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1902) - Andes of extreme southern Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
boliviana (Gould, 1861) - Andes of central and south-eastern Bolivia.
