Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland, temperate grassland. From 2000 - 4,000 m, occasionally up to 4,800 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Genus is apparently closely related to Coeligena, and the two should perhaps be united.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

peruviana Boucard, 1893 - Andes of south-western Colombia (Nariño) through Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia to extreme northern Chile (Tarapacá) and north-western Argentina (south to northern Catamarca and Tucumán).
gigas (Vieillot, 1824) - Central and southern Chile (Atacama to Concepción and Valdivia, occasionally south to Ais�n) and central-western Argentina (south to Mendoza); southern populations winter north to north-western Argentina (Catamarca, Tucumán).
