Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Indigo-capped Hummingbird (Amazilia cyanifrons).

Proposed subspecies australis described from small series of specimens from Guaitara Valley (south-western Colombia) on basis of morphometric differences from nominate. However, strong clinal variation within larger series of nominate birds indicates that it should not be retained. Remarkably isolated subspecies hoffmanni sometimes considered to represent a distinct species on basis of behaviour and voice, in addition to distribution. Formerly listed as Saucerottia sophiae.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • hoffmanni (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  Western Nicaragua and western and central Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Blue-vented Hummingbird (Amazilia hoffmanni).
  • warscewiczi (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  Northern Colombia and extreme north-western Venezuela.
  • braccata (Heine, 1863)   -  Western Venezuela (Andes of Mérida and Trujillo).
  • saucerottei (Delattre and Bourcier, 1846)   -  North-western, north-central and western Colombia.
