Subspecies
Often placed in genus Popelairia, along with Wire-crested Thorntail (Discosura popelairii), Coppery Thorntail (Discosura letitiae) and Green Thorntail (Discosura conversii). Genus closely related to Lophornis.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

melanosternon (Gould, 1868) - South-eastern Colombia and southern Venezuela to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and western Brazil (R Madeira, R Guapor�, R Negro, western Mato Grosso).
langsdorffi (Temminck, 1821) - Eastern Brazil (Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro).
