Bolivia, northern Argentina and Paraguay to Brazil south of Amazonian rainforest area.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Sooty-capped Hermit (Phaethornis augusti).

Proposed subspecies "garleppi" and "pallidiventris" based on aberrant specimens and schwarti (Bahia) and minor (northern Goias, southern Maranh�o) based on individual variation.

No subspecies.
