Subspecies
Forms superspecies with African Swift (Apus barbatus), Pallid Swift (Apus pallidus) and Bradfield's Swift (Apus bradfieldi). Birds breeding in south-eastern Somalia (Hal Hambo) are apparently intermediate between nominate and subspecies bensoni.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

berliozi Ripley, 1965 - Socotra.
bensoni Brooke, 1969 - Somalia. Winters south to coastal Kenya.
