Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From sea-level - 4,350 m.

Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica (B), Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay (B), Peru, Puerto Rico, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, USA, Venezuela.

Vagrant to Netherlands Antilles, Uruguay (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Recent research has shown that subspecies albicincta is far more restricted in range than previously thought.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • mexicana Ridgway, 1910   -  Southern Mexico to Belize.
  • bouchellii Huber, 1923   -  Nicaragua to Panama.
  • pallidifrons (Hartert, 1896)   -  Greater Antilles and locally in Lesser Antilles (Saba, Grenadines, Grenada).
  • minor (Lawrence, 1882)   -  Cordillera of coastal northern Venezuela, recorded to Trinidad.
  • albicincta (Cabanis, 1862)   -  Lowland Venezuela (south of Andes and cordilleras), Guyana and possibly Surinam and French Guiana.
  • subtropicalis Parkes, 1994   -  Middle elevations in Andean highlands from Mérida (Venezuela) and Colombia to Peru.
  • altissima Chapman, 1914   -  High elevations of Andes in Colombia and Ecuador.
  • kuenzeli Niethammer, 1953   -  High elevations of Bolivian Andes and north-western Argentina.
  • zonaris (Shaw, 1796)   -  Southern Brazilian and Bolivian lowlands, and central and eastern Paraguay.
