Habitat
Upper tropical and lower subtropical zone, favouring tall, humid, montane forest, occasionally savanna-like woodland, and stunted ridge-top forest. From 1,050 - 1,700 m, occasionally 500 - 2,300 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia (E) (B), Ecuador (B), Peru (B).

Southern Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru.

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation due to urbanization is the main threat.

Voice
In flight, two or three rasping 'raah-reh' notes, with lower first note. Apparently silent when perched.

Subspecies
Supposedly separate species listed as "Touit emmae" was based on adult female of present species.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet (Touit huetii) shows conspicuous red (and sometimes yellow) on wings. Cobalt-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris cyanoptera) has pointed tail and blue wings.
