Estimated population is 2,000 - 4,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion of forest for agricultural purposes, and exploitation for firewood and grazing, is the main threat.

Habits
Gregarious. Occurs in noisy flocks of 10-100 individuals.
Voice
Flight call is a rapid wader-like mid-range chattering.

Subspecies
Appears to form a superspecies with Andean Parakeet (Bolborhynchus orbygnesius).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Barred Parakeet (Bolborhynchus lineola) generally occurs at lower elevations and is smaller, with pale bill, and black shoulder patch, wing-bars and barring on flanks.
