Habitat
Humid montane forest. From 820 - 2,700 m, but it has been recorded as low as 450 m.
Philippines (B).
Mountains of Mindanao (south-eastern Philippines).
 
Population
Estimated population is 5,000 (2010).
Status NT
Forest habitat loss and possibly trapping for the cage-bird trade are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Montane Racquet-tail (Prioniturus montanus ), Blue-headed Racquet-tail (Prioniturus platenae ) and debatably Sulu Racquet-tail (Prioniturus verticalis ). Often considered conspecific with Montane Racquet-tail (Prioniturus montanus ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
malindangensis Mearns, 1909 - Western Mindanao.
waterstradti Rothschild, 1904 - Mountains of Mindanao (southern Philippines).
