Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).

New Guinea throughout, except for highest areas; also islands of Yapen and Salawati.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

In past considered polytypic, with nominate subspecies confined to birds of Salawati and nearby mainland, and all other populations grouped in subspecies incondita.
