Nest
In burrows excavated in steep mud banks along forested waterways, usually near running water.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
peninsulae Laubmann, 1941 - Southern Myanmar and western Thailand south to Sumatra, and Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malay Blue-banded Kingfisher (Alcedo peninsulae).
euryzona Temminck, 1830 - Java.
Similar Species
Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting) both of which lack the breast band in the male and brownish upperpatrs in the female.
