Subspecies
Birds from southern Somalia and adjacent northern Kenya, described as subspecies somalicus, are now considered inseparable from nominate minor. Birds from southern Kenya to Tanzania, formerly recognized as subspecies extimus, now treated as indistinguishable from cabanisi.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
minor (Rüppell, 1845) - Ethiopia (except south), Somalia and north-eastern Kenya.
cabanisi (de Filippi, 1853) - Southern Sudan, southern Ethiopia and northern and north-western Kenya south to northern Tanzania.
