Subspecies
Most closely related to superspecies formed by Crowned Hornbill (Lophoceros alboterminatus), Bradfield's Hornbill (Lophoceros bradfieldi) and Congo Pied Hornbill (Lophoceros fasciatus). All have similar whistling calls and head-up display posture with wings closed. In past, birds of northern Kenya occasionally separated as subspecies exsul.
