Subspecies
Rather distinct from other Andigena species. Subspecies intergrade where they meet.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
nigrirostris (Waterhouse, 1839) - Andes of western Venezuela and eastern Andean slopes in Colombia.
occidentalis Chapman, 1915 - Western Andes of Colombia.
spilorhynchus Gould, 1858 - Central Andes and western slope of eastern Andes in southern Colombia, and eastern slope in Ecuador; recently collected in extreme northern Peru (Cerro Chinguela).
