Subspecies
No close relatives. Subspecies well marked, but general patterns similar. Also, they interbreed, and intermediates occur.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
steerii (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1878) - Northern Peru from west-central Amazonas south to northern Huánuco. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Blue-cowled Barbet (Eubucco steerii).
glaucogularis (Tschudi, 1844) - Eastern Huánuco south to northern Cuzco. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Blue-chinned Barbet (Eubucco glaucogularis).
versicolor (Müller, 1776) - Southern Peru (Cuzco, Puno) to north-central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
