Subspecies
Apparently related rather closely to Sladen's Barbet (Gymnobucco sladeni) and Bristle-nosed Barbet (Gymnobucco peli). Birds from Mt Cameroon south to Gabon formerly separated from nominate, as subspecies major.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

calvus (Lafresnaye, 1841) - Sierra Leone east to Cameroon and Gabon.
congicus Chapin, 1932 - Western Congo (Brazzaville) and western Zaire south to north-western Angola.
vernayi Boulton, 1931 - West-central Angolan uplands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pale-throated Barbet (Gymnobucco vernayi).
