Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-browed Woodpecker (Piculus aurulentus). Specific name sometimes misspelt as chrysochlorus. Racial differentiation partly obscured by considerable individual variation; birds in southern Colombia (Putumayo) and north-eastern Ecuador lacking red malar stripe may possibly represent a new, as yet unnamed subspecies. Further study is needed, possibly also taxonomic revision.

chrysochloros (Vieillot, 1818) - Central and southern Brazil south to eastern Bolivia, western Paraguay and northern Argentina (Formosa south to Santa Fe).
polyzonus (Valenciennes, 1826) - South-eastern Brazil (Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro).
