Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Picoides. Most closely related to the Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos macei) superspecies. Variation mostly clinal, and named subspecies aurocristatus (northern Myanmar) and koelzi (north-western Sri Lanka) are thus unacceptable.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pallescens (Biswas, 1951) - Eastern Pakistan (east of R Indus) and northern and north-western India.
mahrattensis (Latham, 1801) - Most of India east to Assam, Sri Lanka, and west, central and southern Myanmar, eastern Cambodia, southern Laos and southern Annam; formerly also west-central Thailand (extinct).
