Habitat
Slow-flowing rivers with pools and adjacent flooded grasslands, permanent and seasonal lakes, streams, marshes, brackish coastal lagoons, artificial reservoirs associated with mining, dams, salt pans, sewage works, open water of estuaries. Avoids fast-flowing water.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa (B), Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Cameroon, Somalia.

Population
Estimated population is 150,000 - 1,100,000 (2010).

Status LC
Pollution and hybridization with introduced Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) are the main threats.

Food
Omnivorous. Fruits, seeds, roots, leaves and stems of aquatic and terrestrial plants, aquatic insects and their larvae, crustaceans, molluscs, agricultural grains such as maize and sunflower seeds.

Nest
Composed of grass, rushes and reed stems, located on the ground and usually protected and screened from above by dense, overhanging vegetation. Some nests may have tunnel access through the surrounding grass.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) and Meller's Duck (Anas melleri).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • undulata Dubois, 1839   -  Kenya south-west to Angola and southwards to Cape Province.
  • ruppelli Blyth, 1855   -  Eritrea, Ethiopia, and eastern South Sudan to northern Uganda (now extirpated?) and northern Kenya.
