Habitat
Open woodlands, farmlands, flooded pastures, golf courses and in the vicinity of dams, lakes, estuaries and ponds, usually in groups.

Australia (B).

Vagrant to New Zealand, Papua New Guinea.

South-western and eastern Australia, Tasmania.

Population
Estimated population is 200,000 - 2,000,000 (2010).

Chiefly grass and other herbage.

Voice
Male: a rising nasal 'gnow'. Female: loud, long-drawn, rising lower pitched and longer nasal 'gnow'

Nest
A hole in a tree, lined with down and feathers, often high up, and sometimes far from water.

Eggs (Guide)
9 - 12; smooth, white or cream; oval; about 58 x 43 mm. Incubation: about 28 days; by female, male stands guard.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous. Fledge in about 50 days.
