Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and increasing.
Status VU
Habitat loss due to conversion to agriculture, predation by the introduced mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus), dogs, cats, pigs and rats, and road kills are the main threats.

Voice
A two-part nasal call, 'ah-ahrk' or 'nay-nay' with an accent on either first or second syllable, uttered in flight. Cackles in flocks. Sometimes a series of similar notes 'kip-kip-kip-kip-...'. Also a soft, drawn-out 'nay' when approached.

Small subspecies of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) which has all-black neck with white throat patch, Brent Goose (Branta bernicla) which has entirely dark head, neck and breast.
