Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Elegant Quail (Callipepla douglasii).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
hargravei Rea, 1973 - South-eastern Colorado, south-western Kansas, northern New Mexico, western Oklahoma and north-western Texas, west-central USA.
pallida Brewster, 1881 - Southern Arizona, southern New Mexico and western Texas, south-central USA, to northern Chihuahua and northern Sonora, north-western Mexico.
squamata (Vigors, 1830) - Northern Sonora and northern Tamaulipas south to Valley of Mexico, Mexico.
castanogastris Brewster, 1883 - Southern Texas, southern USA, and north-eastern Mexico.
