Estimated population is <50 (2010).
Status CR
No reliable sightings since 1876. Potential sightings around Naini Tal in 2003 require confirmation. Decline probably due to habitat loss and overhunting.

Habits
Very elusive and reluctant to take flight. Usually in coveys of 6 - 12 birds.
Voice
A shrill whistle.
