Northern, central and south-eastern Sulawesi; probably also Buton (Butung) I, off south-eastern Sulawesi. Populations, probably introduced, formerly occurred off north-eastern Sulawesi on Lembeh and perhaps Bangka, and also on several of Sangihe Is.
 
Population
Estimated population is 8,000 - 14,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Forest destruction and fragmentation, harvesting of eggs, human disturbance are the main threats.

Voice
Several different vocalisations, including extraordinary loud braying, a series of disyllabic rolls, and, in disputes, a duck-like quacking.
