Subspecies
Following recent revision, several proposed subspecies now considered to be based on age differences in plumage and other features: thus, tamaulipensis, described from Alta Mira (Tamaulipas), in eastern Mexico, yucatanensis, from Yucatán Peninsula, and troglodytes, from San Felipe (Retalhuleu), on Pacific slope of Guatemala, all subsumed in mentalis; and gigas, from Sacapulas (valley of R Negro), in central Guatemala, and xerophilus, from Progreso (Motagua Valley), in south-western Guatemala, both synonymized with nominate.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
mentalis Lesson, R, 1831 - Extreme southern USA (lower Rio Grande Valley, in Texas) and eastern and southern Mexico (to Yucatán Peninsula, across Isthmus of Tehuantepec to Matias Romero area, also Pacific lowlands of Chiapas eastern from about Pijijiapan) south to Guatemala (to La Avellana region), and northern Belize.
gularis (Wagler, 1829) - Pacific lowlands of southern Mexico (Isthmus of Tehuantepec south to Tapanatepec, in Oaxaca), also interior Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and western Nicaragua.
flavescens Phillips, AR, 1966 - Guerrero, in southern Mexico.
tamaulipensis Ridgway, 1901 - Southern Texas (lower Rio Grande Valley) to south-eastern Mexico (Campeche).
yucatanensis Berlepsch, 1888 - South-eastern Mexico (Yucatán Peninsula), Cozumel I. and extreme northern Belize.
troglodytes Griscom, 1930 - Southern Mexico (extreme southern Chiapas) and Pacific slope of Guatemala.
gigas Griscom, 1930 - Interior southern Guatemala to Honduras and w-central Nicaragua.
