Subspecies
Hybridizes rarely with Yellow-backed Oriole (Icterus chrysater). Form Icterus xantholemus, known only by type specimen supposedly from Ecuador, was previously thought to be immature of present species or perhaps a hybrid of unknown parentage, but has now been shown to be a synonym of Saffron-cowled Blackbird (Xanthopsar flavus).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
mesomelas (Wagler, 1829) - Southern Mexico (from Veracruz) south to Honduras.
salvinii Cassin, 1867 - Caribbean lowlands from Nicaragua south to western Panama (Bocas del Toro).
carrikeri Todd, 1917 - Panama (from east of Canal) southern on both coasts to western and central Colombia and north-western Venezuela (Zulia).
taczanowskii Ridgway, 1901 - Pacific coast of Ecuador and north-western Peru (Tumbes, also upper Marañón Valley).
xantholemus Gil Lletget, 1918 - Ecuador (probable immature taczanowskii or unknown hybrid).
