Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Bay-headed Tanager (Tangara gyrola) and replaces it in lowlands of wet Choco-Pacific region.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cara (Bangs, 1905) - Extreme eastern Guatemala (Puerto Barrios), Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica south to Panama (to San Blas).
dalmasi (Hellmayr, 1910) - Locally on Pacific slope of Panama (Chiriquí and Veraguas east to eastern Panamá).
lavinia (Cassin, 1858) - Extreme eastern Panama (eastern Darién) and southern along Pacific slope of Colombia (from northern Chocó), including Gorgona I, to western Ecuador (Pichincha).
